Protecting Your Outdoor Timber Investment

Outdoor timber is one of the most rewarding — and most vulnerable — materials in your home. A well-maintained deck, fence, or pergola adds enormous lifestyle value and visual appeal to your property. But Melbourne's climate is particularly harsh on timber: intense summer UV degrades the surface, winter moisture promotes rot and mould, and temperature swings cause expansion and contraction that can split boards and loosen fixings. Professional staining and sealing is essential to protect your investment and keep your outdoor spaces looking their best.

Timber Types and Their Specific Needs

Different timber species respond differently to Melbourne's conditions, and each requires a tailored approach:

Merbau (Kwila) The most popular decking timber in Melbourne, Merbau is naturally durable and resistant to rot. However, it is prone to tannin bleeding — dark brown water run-off that stains surrounding surfaces — especially when new. We recommend allowing new Merbau to weather for six to eight weeks before applying the first coat of oil. After initial tannin release, Merbau responds beautifully to oil-based stains that enhance its rich red-brown grain.

Spotted Gum An Australian hardwood prized for its durability and attractive grain variation. Spotted Gum is naturally resistant to termites and decay but benefits significantly from UV protection. Without treatment, it silvers and can develop surface checking. We use penetrating oil stains that nourish the timber and provide UV-filtering pigments to maintain the natural honey-gold colour.

Treated Pine The most affordable decking option, treated pine is chemically treated to resist rot and termites. It accepts stain readily and can be finished in a wide range of colours. However, it is softer than hardwoods and more prone to surface wear, so regular re-staining every two to three years is essential. We always check the moisture content before staining — treated pine must be dry enough (below 15% moisture) for the stain to penetrate properly.

Blackbutt and Ironbark Premium Australian hardwoods that offer exceptional durability and a beautiful, tight grain. These dense timbers require penetrating oil stains that can work into the tight grain structure. Surface-sitting coatings can peel on these dense timbers, so we always recommend penetrating oil-based products.

Oil-Based vs Water-Based Products

Oil-Based Stains (Recommended for Most Decks) - Penetrate deep into the timber for superior protection from within - Enhance and highlight the natural grain pattern - Nourish the timber, preventing drying and cracking - Easy to maintain — simply clean and recoat without sanding - Longer drying times (24–48 hours before foot traffic) - Brands we recommend: Sikkens, Cabots, Intergrain

Water-Based Stains (Best for Fences and Vertical Surfaces) - Faster drying times (2–4 hours between coats) - Lower VOC emissions — more environmentally friendly - Easier cleanup with water - Better for light-coloured or painted looks on fences - Less penetration than oil — sits more on the surface - Brands we recommend: Cabot's Aquadeck, Intergrain UltraDeck

Our Deck Restoration Process

  • Assessment: We inspect the deck's condition, testing for rot, loose boards, popped nails, and moisture content. Any structural issues are identified before cosmetic work begins.

2. Repairs: Damaged boards are replaced, popped nails are driven and sealed, loose screws are tightened, and any splintering is sanded smooth. This ensures a safe, solid surface before staining.

3. Cleaning: The deck is pressure washed with a timber-specific cleaning solution that removes dirt, mould, algae, and grey weathered fibres. For previously oiled decks, we use a deck stripping product to remove old coating residue.

4. Sanding: After drying, we sand the deck surface to open the grain and create an even, receptive surface for the stain. For hardwood decks, we use 80-grit paper; for softwood, 60-grit provides the ideal key.

5. Staining: Two coats of premium stain are applied using a combination of brush, roller, and pad applicator, depending on the timber type and product. We work in manageable sections, maintaining a wet edge to prevent lap marks.

6. Curing: We advise on curing times specific to the product used — typically 24 to 48 hours before foot traffic and seven days before placing furniture. Proper curing is essential for the stain to develop its full protective properties.

Maintenance Schedule for Melbourne Conditions

To maximise the life of your deck stain in Melbourne's climate:

  • - Every 3 months: Sweep leaves and debris, particularly in autumn. Standing leaf litter traps moisture and promotes mould.
  • - Every 6 months: Wash the deck with a mild detergent and soft bristle broom. This removes accumulated grime before it degrades the stain.
  • - Every 12 months: Inspect the deck for wear, particularly in high-traffic areas and spots that receive direct sunlight. Apply a maintenance coat to worn areas if needed.
  • - Every 2–3 years: Full re-stain for optimal protection. In high-UV areas, this may be needed sooner.

Fence Painting and Staining

Fences endure the same harsh conditions as decks but often receive less maintenance attention. We offer both painting and staining options for timber fences:

  • - Solid paint: Provides a clean, uniform appearance and excellent UV protection. Best for front fences where a defined colour is desired.
  • - Semi-transparent stain: Allows the timber grain to show while adding colour and UV protection. Creates a more natural, relaxed look for side and rear fences.
  • - Preservative stain: A clear or lightly tinted product that protects the timber while preserving the natural wood appearance. Ideal for feature hardwood fences.
