Our Interior Painting Process

At PaintersPro, we follow a proven six-step process for every interior painting project in Melbourne's northern suburbs. This systematic approach ensures consistently outstanding results — whether we are painting a single feature wall or transforming an entire home.

Step 1: Consultation and Colour Selection

Every interior project begins with a complimentary in-home consultation. Our colour consultant visits your property to assess the rooms, discuss your vision, and consider the existing furnishings, lighting conditions, and architectural style. We bring large A4-size colour samples — not tiny paint chips — so you can see how colours genuinely look in your specific space under both natural and artificial light. This personalised approach eliminates the guesswork and ensures you love the final result.

Step 2: Surface Preparation

Preparation is the foundation of a lasting paint job. Our team thoroughly inspects every surface, filling nail holes, cracks, and imperfections with premium filler. We sand all surfaces smooth, clean walls to remove dust and cobwebs, and apply painter's tape to protect cornices, trims, and edges. For previously wallpapered walls or surfaces with significant damage, we carry out additional preparation including skim coating and sealing.

Step 3: Protection and Masking

Before any paint is opened, we meticulously protect your home. Drop sheets cover all floors, furniture is moved to the centre of the room or relocated, light fittings and power points are masked, and all adjacent surfaces are carefully taped. We treat your home with the same care we would our own.

Step 4: Priming

Bare plaster, new repairs, and stained surfaces receive appropriate primer coats. We use stain-blocking primers for water marks and tannin stains, adhesion primers for glossy surfaces, and general-purpose primers for new plasterwork. Correct priming ensures the topcoat adheres properly and achieves full colour depth.

Step 5: Painting

We apply two full coats of premium interior paint, allowing proper drying time between coats. Ceilings are painted first, followed by walls, and finally trims and doors. Our painters use a combination of brush and roller techniques — cutting in carefully at edges with angled brushes and rolling walls with premium microfibre rollers for a smooth, even finish. For large open-plan areas, we maintain a wet edge to prevent lap marks and ensure seamless coverage.

Step 6: Inspection and Handover

After the final coat has dried, we conduct a thorough inspection of every painted surface, checking for consistency, coverage, and any touch-ups needed. We then walk through the completed rooms with you, addressing any concerns on the spot. All masking and protection is removed, the space is cleaned, and we hand over any remaining paint for future touch-ups.

Room-by-Room Expertise

Living Areas: We recommend durable, washable finishes in warm, inviting tones. Dulux Wash & Wear is our go-to for living rooms — it resists scuffs and marks while providing a beautiful low-sheen finish. Feature walls in deeper colours add character and visual interest.

Bedrooms: Restful, calming colours in low-sheen or matte finishes create the ideal sleeping environment. We use low-VOC paints as standard in bedrooms to minimise any odour during and after painting.

Kitchens and Bathrooms: Wet areas demand moisture-resistant paint formulated to withstand steam and humidity. We use semi-gloss or satin finishes in kitchens and bathrooms for easy cleaning and superior moisture performance.

Hallways and High-Traffic Areas: These hardworking spaces benefit from ultra-durable finishes. We apply premium scuff-resistant paints that maintain their appearance despite daily wear from school bags, pets, and busy family life.

Living in Your Home During Painting

Most of our Melbourne clients continue living in their homes while we paint. We work room by room, completing each space before moving to the next. Bedrooms are always finished in a single day so they are available for sleeping that night. We use low-VOC paints that minimise odour and are safe for families, including those with young children and pets. Clear daily communication ensures you always know which areas are being painted and which are available for normal use.
